Singular Sensation: The Triumph of Broadway By: Michael Riedel

A joyous romp through an amazingly creative and complicated decade of Broadway productions and those who create. Filled with amazing insight, hysterical quotes and facts galore, the reader will fly through this and wish for an encore or two. Maybe Mr. Riedel should publish a book for each decade since Broadway's inception-I'd line up for each new book!

The Cookbook Collector By: Allegra Goodman

I don't know what it is about Goodman's writing, but I always have a sense of serenity while reading her works, no matter the subject matter.  Set during the rise and fall of the dot.com era, this enchanting look at family, love and greed is as delicious as the recipes mentioned throughout!

The Trigger Episode By: Tom Straw

A rip-roaring noirish novel, that is immensely readable and completely engrossing!  Hardwicke-a fascinating anti-hero, gets pulled into the world of network television and it's diva star, which leads to all sorts of intrigue and violence.  (this book made me nostalgic for LA Confidential-so much so that I had to watch the movie!)  A cast of characters that will keep you glued to the action until the oh, so satisfying conclusion!

Song of Spider-Man By: Glen Berger

This should be a must read for any theatre student!  An enlightening, disturbing, upsetting and unflinching look at the creation and mounting of the musical Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark, from one of the co-book writers.  Immensely readable, Mr. Berger takes the reader on his 6 year journey of helping to create this musical, that was oft in the news-and not for good reasons. As a theatre practitioner and fan, I found parts of this very disturbing and kept asking myself why didn't they do x, y or z, at any given moment. There has always been a fine line between the art of theatre and the business of theatre and never has it been more exposed than in this fantastic book!

Waisted By: Randy Susan Meyers

A deeply upsetting look at the pressures (from all quarters) on women to be thin.  At times infuriating, at times upsetting, and at times hopeful and uplifting.  Meyers has a particular knack of getting her readers immediately into her characters, warts and all, and immediately into the action of her stories.  The reader can't help but empathize, and reflect n ourselves, as indeed a great number of her characters are mirrors of ourselves.  Meyers is adept at writing the "every person" novel, no matter the setting or circumstance.

The Martin Chronicles By: John Fried

An absolutely delightful, charming and nostalgic look at one boy's adolescence and the lessons it brings.  I defy anyone to read this book and not flashback to their own teen years!  This is such a great read!

The Tourist By: Robert Dickinson

While well written, with vivid descriptions, I can honestly say I have no idea what this book was about, nor can I honestly say that any of the story lines actually concluded.  It was bizarre-but in it's on way kind of fun-like a drug trip without the drug.

The Book of Longings By: Sue Monk Kidd

Not a big fan of organized religion, so a book set in the time of Jesus that follows his fictionalized wife, was a bit much for me to get through, but Kidd's writing is so gorgeous, one can't help but be swept along in the story.

Before We Go Extinct By: Karen Rivers

Who knew you could write a book about the plight of sharks and teenage suicide, and make it compelling, depressing, moving and hopeful?  Apparently, Karen Rivers, knew this, because that's exactly what she did in this brilliant novel!

A Whisker of a Doubt By: Cate Conte

A purrfectly constructed mystery!  With a number of story lines, that at first seem as tangled as last year's Christmas lights, A Whisker of a Doubt, carefully untangles each one until the solution(s) are wrapped up like a beautiful gift under the tree!  This is my favorite in this excellent series!  A purfect read for a chilly winter's night!

Class: What She Does Next Will Astound You Created By: Patrick Ness/Written By: James Goss

Having never seen the show from which this book is based upon, I didn't quite know what to expect.  It took me a while to figure out what was happening and who was who, but I let myself be taken along on this trippy ride.  What this amounts to is a treatise on social media, told through a funny and intriguing sci-fi story.

Shucked Apart By: Barbara Ross

I don't know how Ms. Ross does it, but each book in this series, gets better and better...and considering how fantastic the first book was, that's quite an achievement.  Oysters abound in this mystery...a little history, lessons in oysters and oyster farming, a dead body and getting ready for the upcoming tourists season.  The action starts immediately and doesn't let up until the very end.  Speaking of the very end...for those of you who are fans of the series...you may not be happy with a particular long running story line of this series!

The Light Years By: Chris Rush

I wasn't quite sure what to expect from this memoir, but I went along for the ride...and what a ride!  Mr. Rush's writing style, honesty and poetic language were engaging and enthralling.  A mess of a family life, a total mess of a childhood, lead to life altering experiences, some good, a LOT not good, and a sense of hope.  A fascinating and moving read to start my year!
