The Weeds By: Katy Simpson Smith

I wasn't sure at all about what this book was about as I was reading it.  It wasn't until I was half way through that I figured it out.  Oddly enough, I didn't mind not having a clue.  The book is so beautifully written that I was just enjoying the words.  I finally figured out that this is a story of two women from different times told through the field and language of botany.  Each chapter and subchapter is titled for a particular flower, or grass or weed or tree, etc... and the story in that chapter is stunningly poetic and ties each woman's story to the title plant.  This manages to be poetry, botany, women's history and fiction all at the same time.  Simply beautiful!
