I first read this book when it came out when I was a teenager, and I remember liking it. Rereading it almost 40 years later, I'm amazed that I still really like it. That doesn't usually happen! The author makes no apologies for his characters, and they are presented as real people. There is no sentimentality involved, which oddly enough, makes it more moving for the reader. This gay coming of age tale has stood the test of time and is still a polished gem of a story.
