I was all set to write this one off as me not being in the right frame of mind, or the book itself not having Ryan's usual urgency, then I got toward the end, and with her usual brilliance, Ryan turns the whole story on it's head with a few sentences. The twists then come fast and furious and bring all of the book into full focus and I was left breathless. You'll be thinking about this one long after you've finished it!

The Spare Man By: Mary Robinette Kowal
This has to be one of the most fun books I've read in a while. It's basically The Thin Man in space, and it is delicious! Tesla (fabulously wealthy robotics engineer) and her new husband Shal (newly retired detective are on taking a cruise to Mars for their honeymoon. In between all the cocktails and canoodling the bodies start piling up. Once riled up there is no stopping Tesla and taking this cruise with her, Shal and their adorable dog, Gimlet, is a ride you won't want to forget!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue By: V.E. Schwab
A clever and insightful take on the Faustian bargain. Schwab's writing is stunningly gorgeous-her turn of phrase, her specific choices really give the reader, not only a sense of place and time, but actually touch the senses. There is real feeling in this striking novel. I was quite astounded by it's beauty, as well as it's darkness. An amazing read!

Three Debts Paid By: Anne Perry
Not a lot of Daniel in this one, which oddly worked. Miriam takes a huge leap forward in what I've always felt was a joint narrative, and and old school chum takes center stage as the inspector investigating 3 horrific deaths. As per usual, Perry's grasp of the human condition is always in the forefront of all of her stories, and this one is no different. With an ingenious mystery and an ending that will leave you breathless, Perry has done it again!

One Fatal Flaw By: Anne Perry
With her usual finesse, Perry manages to twist her own plots in ways that keep the reader glued to the page in breathless anticipation of what will come next, will the good guys win in the end, and how will be tied up. One Fatal Flaw is three courtroom dramas rolled into one hell of a mystery with a climactic ending that will leave you cheering for young Daniel Pitt!
An Offbeat Assembly of Nameless Tales By: Scott E. Morse
Typos aside, this is a well written collection of shorts, that live up to it's title. Offbeat! Some tales are truly twisted, some have a surprising amount of heart, and some provided wry humor. My favorites are the twist endings that totally throw you. Reminiscent of the old Suspense radio shows.

The Killings at Badger's Drift By: Caroline Graham
I can't believe I'm going to use this word to describe a mystery, but The Killings at Badger's Drift is utterly charming! A delightfully twisted set of characters in an idyllic English town hide a great many secrets in this complex mystery. This is the book that inspired the long running Midsomer Murders tv series; and it beautifully sets up it's locale and characters. Fans of the tv show, fans of mysteries, and fans of great storytelling will love this!

The Wrong Man By: David Ellis
David Ellis seems to have forgotten that oxygen is important, because he writes lightening fast stories that don't allow the reader to breathe! What starts out as a simple case, turns into a massive problem for the entire city of Chicago and Jason is smack dab in the middle of it! Amazingly paced, tightly plotted and a twist that would make a tornado jealous, makes The Wrong Man the Right Read!

Magpie Murders By: Anthony Horowitz
One the most creative mysteries I've read in a looooong time! A book within a book; a mystery within a mystery; characters from other characters. I have no words to describe the absolute brilliance of this work except to say the Mr. Horowitz has created a masterpiece.

Red Snow by: Will Dean
If you haven't read Will Dean's work-you must! Where else are you going to find a deaf, bi-sexual reporter in upper Sweden, but in a Will Dean novel. Red Snow picks up shortly after Dark Pines (although this one stands on it's own you really should read Dark Pines first), and finds Tuva prepping to leave for a new job. Of course her last 10 days in town are rife with bodies, mysteries, hurt and heart, all centered around the town's largest employer, the Licorice (US spelling) factory. In Dean's hands the wide open expanses of upper Sweden become extremely claustrophobic during a February winter.
